NDN Collective: Empowering Indigenous Communities & Redefining Wealth

Nick Tilsen Steps Down as CEO of Thunder Valley Corp To Lead NDN

By  Twila Schaden

Is genuine transformation possible? It is not only possible, but absolutely essential, and the NDN Collective is stepping up to lead the charge in standing up for native people and forging pathways towards true change and opportunity.

The organizations commitment extends to safeguarding indigenous communities while simultaneously generating employment, enhancing educational opportunities, and constructing a more just and equitable future for all. This multifaceted approach underscores the NDN Collective's dedication to holistic community development and empowerment.

Nick Tilsen and Gaby Strong have articulated the NDN Collective's vision to redefine wealth according to indigenous principles, supported by a substantial $50 million community trust fund. This initiative calls upon philanthropic organizations to take more decisive steps in returning accumulated wealth to Black and indigenous communities, aiming to rectify historical economic imbalances. The NDN Collective, at its core, operates with an overarching strategy: to shift power dynamics, decolonize wealth streams, and directly resource indigenous populations who are actively engaged in the struggle for justice and equity. It is an organization operated entirely by indigenous leadership, board members, and staff, representing over 25 tribal nations, demonstrating a profound commitment to indigenous self-determination and leadership.

The presidents decision to act in favor of Indigenous rights is the culmination of decades of grassroots organizing within Indian Country. The decision follows the exposure of increasing evidence of prosecutorial misconduct and constitutional violations during legal proceedings. These elements highlight the ongoing struggles and resilience of indigenous communities in their pursuit of justice and recognition.

NDN Collective President and CEO, Nick Tilsen (Oglala Lakota), is a prominent figure often seen standing alongside community members during liberation day events, exemplifying his commitment to solidarity and advocacy.

On Saturday, August 15th, the NDN Collective announced the launch of three online petitions directly related to their ongoing activism. These petitions aim to 1) compel the closure of Mount Rushmore and the repatriation of all public lands within the Black Hills, 2) secure the dismissal of all charges against Black Hills land defenders, and 3) ensure the dropping of charges against NDN Collective President and CEO, Nick Tilsen. This coordinated effort demonstrates the organizations strategic approach to addressing systemic injustices and advocating for indigenous sovereignty and land rights.
