Ever wondered if paradise could be found just a stone's throw from a bustling freeway? The enduring legacy of "Gilligan's Island" lies not only in its quirky characters and improbable scenarios, but also in the surprising revelation that the tropical haven we all knew and loved was, in reality, a cleverly disguised backlot set. This iconic show, a staple of American television, continues to captivate audiences with its simple premise and endearing castaways.

Premiering in September of 1964, "Gilligan's Island" quickly became a cultural phenomenon, despite its seemingly simple plot: seven mismatched individuals shipwrecked on an uncharted desert island. The show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz, crafted a world that was both whimsical and strangely relatable, a place where the everyday problems of life were magnified by the isolation of their tropical prison. The show, with its unforgettable theme song and brightly colored sets, was like a living cartoon. The premise was so popular that a saturday morning cartoon series had the same basic idea. It lasted two seasons with 24 episodes. Then, in the 80s, there was a sequel about the shipwrecked crew in space!

The familiar lagoon, a central element of "Gilligan's Island," wasn't some exotic, far-flung paradise. Instead, the outdoor lagoon was located in Studio City, a mere outsize water tank. The lagoon wasn't heated or filtered, so the stagnant water became brackish. Despite its less-than-glamorous origins, the lagoon served as the backdrop for countless comedic moments and provided the castaways with a constant reminder of their isolation.

Interestingly, the pilot episode of "Gilligan's Island" was actually filmed in Hawaii, which was a big draw for Natalie Schafer, a.k.a. Mrs. Howell. However, the remainder of the series was filmed on the CBS studio center's back lot (old republic studios), which had been built in 1964. This location was only about 800 yards from the freeway.

The filming of "Gilligan's Island" occurred during the fall and winter months, which meant that the cast members sometimes had to swim in chilly, 50-degree water. Bob Denver often wore a wet suit under his clothes to combat the cold temperature. During the summer months, the lagoon would become stagnant. While "Gilligan's Island" appeared to be filmed on an island, it was not. According to the Los Angeles Times, the lagoon set was located on CBS's studio city lot, after all.

The "Gilligan's Island" lagoon set (historical site) is the former location of the outdoor lagoon set for Gilligan's Island. The location is approximate based on a recently discovered aerial photo. It had a waterfall being emptied into it, and the castaways sometimes swam in it, which could be an indication that it is freshwater.
