Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, became a symbol of bravery on December 14, 2012. On that day, a horrific act of violence shattered the peace of the small town and claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults. Among the victims were Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Sherlach, both remembered by colleagues, students, and parents as educators deeply committed to their charges. Hochsprungs final act of courage, attempting to stop the shooter Adam Lanza, cemented her legacy as a hero. She was 47 years old.
