The Truth About: Surviving Inside A Whale (It's Gruesome!)

Inside The Stomach Of A Whale

By  Hailey Jacobs

Ever wondered what it would be like to be swallowed whole by a whale? While the idea might seem like an outlandish adventure ripped from the pages of a children's book, the reality is far more gruesome and less romantic.

The question of human survivability inside a whale's stomach is one that has fascinated and horrified people for centuries. Tales of miraculous survival, like that of Jonah in the Bible or the alleged ordeal of James Bartley, a whaler supposedly swallowed by a sperm whale in the late 19th century, have fueled the imagination. But how much of these stories are based on fact, and how much is pure fiction? Let's plunge into the depths of a whale's belly to find out.

Name James Bartley (alleged)
Occupation Whaler
Incident Date (Alleged) Late 19th Century
Location (Alleged) Falkland Islands
Summary of Alleged Incident Bartley was supposedly swallowed by a sperm whale during a whaling expedition. He was later found alive in the whale's stomach.
Status of Account Largely discredited; considered a myth.

The initial encounter is fraught with peril. Consider the teeth. While many whales are baleen whales, filtering tiny organisms from the water, toothed whales, like the sperm whale, possess formidable dentition. The story, as reported, recounts Bartley's boat being attacked by a whale off the Falkland Islands, leading to his unfortunate entry into the whale's mouth. Surviving that initial attack is no small feat. If you survive the sharp knives masquerading as teeth, it's time to squeeze through the esophagus. Sperm whales often swallow prey like squid whole, so humans could make it through their throat. But "could" is the operative word here.

Assuming one somehow manages to bypass the teeth and navigate the esophagus, the next challenge is the stomach itself. A whale's throat is not only a tight space, but it's also dark and slimy. My major concerns, before doing any research, are how realistically lethal are stomach biles and suffocation risks inside another creature's body? What other serious risks might I be missing? The physiological conditions within a whales stomach, combined with the whales digestive processes, create an environment wholly incompatible with human life. Lets delve into the myriad reasons why.

First and foremost, there's the issue of oxygen. Theres no doubt that a human would suffocate and die inside a whale. Not only would the whale's stomach acid make quick work of you, but you'd experience a distinct lack of air on the inside. Suffocation would likely be one of the first, and most pressing, concerns. The whale's stomach is not designed to be a breathable environment, and the limited amount of oxygen present would quickly be depleted.

Then there's the digestive process itself. The whales stomach is a hostile environment designed to break down food, not sustain life. The whales stomach contains powerful digestive acids and enzymes that would quickly break down organic matter. Whale stomach temperatures are generally around 35.5C (95.9F), which is similar to human body temperature. Transit time, from the stomach to the anus, is from 15 to 18 hours.

Consider the case of the sperm whale, which produces a substance called ambergris. This substance facilitates digestion of squid beaks, which can otherwise irritate the bowel. Now imagine the effect of those same digestive juices on human flesh. The combination of asphyxiation, corrosive acids, and the crushing power of the whales digestive system makes survival virtually impossible. While the fantasy of surviving inside a whales stomach is captivating, the reality is a swift and unpleasant death.

Even if one were to somehow survive the initial onslaught of stomach acid, the long-term prospects are bleak. The internal environment of a whale's stomach is not conducive to human life. It's unlikely you'd be able to crawl out. Theres also a lack of oxygen.

The alleged story of James Bartley claims that he survived for 36 hours inside the whale. By the next day, when his comrades picked up the whale, killed it, and slaughtered the stomach, it was quite surprising: a man curled up in the stomach of the whale. An extraordinary story, if true. But skeptics abound. This is one of the bible stories most ridiculed by people who consider themselves sophisticated and intellectual. Skeptics say that no whale could swallow a man in the first place, and, even if he did, the man would certainly never survive three days and three nights in his belly, as the bible suggests in the story of Jonah.

However, there are no verified cases of anyone surviving being swallowed and remaining in a whales stomach for any significant period. Many whales simply eat krill, and have no interest in humans. Toothed whales, like sperm whales, have larger throats, but swallowing a human would still be extremely rare and unlikely. Sperm whales are able to swallow squids whole, so they wouldnt have a problem swallowing a human. If you were that lucky person?

What do whales typically eat? The first chamber of the whales stomach works the same way as the digestive system of ruminants and breaks down the main component of crustacean carapaces. The latter then becomes available as a food, which is not negligible since carapaces represent up to 10% of a whales total food intake. In both cases, however, there is only one main digestive chamber. The additional chambers in some species likely function more as preliminary storage or processing areas rather than full secondary stomachs.

The unfortunate reality is that whales often ingest things they shouldn't. Inside the stomach, a team found squid beaks and fish skeletons, as well as loads of trash that may have contributed to the whale's death, lab director Kristi West said. Marine debris kills a million whales, seals, turtles, shorebirds, and other species every year through ingestion or entanglement. What was found in whale's stomach?

When I was a child, I was watching a cartoon from tv called Pinocchio adventures. Pinocchio was a wooden doll. In one part, a big whale ate Pinocchio, and he walked inside the whale's stomach until he found his grandfather Gepetto there at the end of the whale's stomach! This, of course, is a fantasy. The whales stomach is a hostile environment designed to break down food, not sustain life. Why survival is impossible? Hostile environment.

So, what would happen if you got swallowed by a whale? It's a grim prospect, far removed from the fanciful tales of survival. The combined forces of suffocation, digestive acids, and the sheer improbability of even making it into the stomach alive make survival inside a whale an almost certain impossibility. While the ocean holds many wonders, a whale's belly is not one of them.
